In good to fine condition. The enamel on the banner is chipped but no less than 75% of it remains intact, having only some tiny contact marks and retaining a nice luster. The red enamel on the scroll has a couple of minuscule surface flakes almost unnoticeable to the naked eye, otherwise perfect. The azure enamel representing sky and multi-colored enamel in the lower portion (the ground) is flawless. The details of the horseman are very well preserved and crisp.

Much of the original silver plating on the reverse is present. The screw post is full length, nearly 11 mm. The screw plate is a replacement. Although far from perfect, this is an overall attractive example of the early version of the Khalkhin Gol Badge.

The badge was awarded for participation in the battle against the Japanese Kwantung Army in Manchuria in 1939. The relief reverse variation was manufactured prior to the Patriotic War and issued during 1941 - 1946 period. Among its 3000 recipients most were Soviet veterans of the battle at Khalkhin Gol. Although it was initially called a badge, this is essentially a campaign medal, and was later upgraded in status in Mongolia to be considered just that.
