Kasli Cast Iron Statuette of Hunting Dog, circa 1880s-90s.
Large and massive, measures 11" wide x 5" high x 4 ½" deep, and weighs nearly 6 lbs. This finely sculpted figurine of a setter on the hunt, sniffing for a bird's scent, is not only beautiful and full of grace and repose. It is scarce in its intact original design and components, showing the large low leafy plant between the dog's front paws, often missing from other casts of this model, and the square nuts on the bottom, used before the Soviet era. This rare find will take a proud place in a collection of Imperial Russian antiques. It is sculpted in much finer detail than later casts of this model created during the Soviet period, and is almost an exact copy of the bronze "Medor" by Pierre Jules Mêne, 19th century French sculptor-animalist famous for his bronze statuettes of animals and hunting scenes.
In excellent condition. The "Dutch soot" coating is almost completely intact on the statuette and the base with the exception of two little scuffs on the dog's back, a tiny spot of rust in the folds of the dog's left ear, not easily noticeable, and a little area of rust on the bottom of the base, easily fixable there, if desired.
