Commemorative Jetton of a Graduate of the Don Cadet Corps (Junior Military Academy) of Emperor Alexander III, 1890s - 1910s.

White metal (possibly silver-plated brass), enamels. Measures 33.8 mm in height including the eyelet, 12.9 mm in width; weighs 4.0 g without the connecting links. The reverse is blank. The enamelwork is of very high quality, and the details of the Alexander III's cypher are very precise despite the small size of the jetton.

Excellent condition. The enamel shows a beautiful luster and is essentially flawless; there are only a couple of microscopic contact marks invisible to the unaided eye. The connecting links are a later addition.

The Don Cadet Corps (Junior Military Academy) was founded in 1883 in Novocherkassk by a decree of Emperor Alexander III. It comprised 450 students, mostly sons of officers of the Don and other Cossack Hosts, and had a seven-year study course. By 1908, i.e. in the first 25 years of its existence, there had been 975 graduates. During the Russian Revolution and Civil War many of the current cadets, all of them underaged, took part in the fighting against the Bolsheviks. They played a prominent role in some of the key battles and campaigns such as the Ice Campaign of Gen. Kornilov and Steppe Campaign of Maj. Gen. Popov.
