Silver, enamel. Measures 44.9 mm in height (including the eyelet but not the connecting link), 25.9 mm in width; weighs 7.2 g not including the connecting link. Riveted two-piece construction. Features an enameled Red Cross emblem with engraved inscription "Commune of St. Elisabeth". Superimposed on the top is the cipher of Grand Duchess Elisaveta Fyodorovna. The reverse shows a Latin maker mark N.P. Next to it is an "84"silver hallmark with the initials ЯЛ ("Ya.L.") of the St. Petersburg assay inspector Yakov Lyapunov who held the position from 1899-1903. In the central portion of the reverse is engraved name of the recipient, Lukeriya Danilovna Orlova (Лукерия Даниловна Орлова), and a 1902 date of issue.

The jetton is in excellent condition. The enamel is well-preserved, having only some tiny scratches and contact marks but no chips, flaking or other significant damage. The details of the crown and cyphers are nearly pristine and exceptionally crisp, showing only the slightest wear to the high points. The eyelet and connecting link for a watch fob are completely intact and fully functional. There is a very attractive, even toning to silver throughout.

The St. Elisabeth Commune of Medical Nurses operated as part of the Russian Red Cross under the auspices of Grand Duchess Elisaveta. The silver jetton was issued by its Funding Committee; requirements for the award included not only donating at least 10 rubles to the commune, but also performing a certain amount of work as a volunteer. Some are known to have been awarded to foreigners.
