The artwork is an offset print of Zadorozhnyy's 1955 painting depicting the scene of capture of a group of members of the Young Guard, a sizable Soviet underground group consisting mostly of Komsomol-age youth, formed during the Nazi occupation of the city of Krasnodon in Ukraine. They performed subversive actions and sabotage on the occupied territory of Krasnodon until, as the accepted version of events goes, they were betrayed by one of their members. Arrests and executions followed interrogation and torture. The largest executions took place on 15, 16, and 31 January 1943 when the total of 71 people were thrown into the shaft of the Krasnodon Mine # 5, some of them still alive. Forty-nine of them were the Young Guards. Two weeks later Krasnodon was liberated by the troops of the Southwestern Front.

In excellent condition. The verso shows even and attractive age-toning. The obverse has minuscule corner bumps and a very faint stain to the upper left corner, barely noticeable and not detractive. The artwork is completely unaffected by any wear.

The painting was presented at the 1955 World Youth Festival in Warsaw and took the silver medal.
