Excellent Railway Track Maintenance Man badge, circa late 1940s.
Brass gilt, enamels. Measures 38.6 mm in height (from the bottom to the highest point of the banner not including the flagpole finial), 27.2 mm in width; weighs 14.9 g without the screw plate. An early post-war version featuring a relatively flat central portion and silver finish on the reverse. The screw post is approx. 3.3 mm in diameter.
The enamel has only some microscopic contact marks and a couple of surface flakes that are completely invisible to the naked eye. There are no chips or significant flaking - an unusual case. Both red and white enamels retain a beautiful luster

Both red and white enamels retain a beautiful luster. The details of the artwork and wreath are well preserved and crisp. Some of the original gilt finish is visible in recessed areas of the wreath. The original silver plating on the reverse is practically pristine. The screw post is full length, over 11 mm, and comes with an original early post-war screw plate maker marked "ShMZ-d MPS" ("Mechanical Stamping Factory, Ministry of Railroad Transportation"). Overall, a very attractive example of one of the harder to find badges of the railroad proficiency series.
