The medal is in outstanding, excellent condition. The obverse is literally pristine: there is no wear visible to the naked eye and only a few microscopic contact marks that are hard to find even with a 10x loupe. The reverse has some minuscule contact marks that are barely noticeable, no significant dings, scratches or wear. The raised details of the artwork and lettering are perfect and exceptionally crisp on both sides. The original "gilt finish" (mint luster) is beautifully preserved on both sides of the medallion, especially on the reverse where it remains exceptionally bright. On the reverse, there is very mild toning that adds character. Neither side has any blemishes or significant oxidation spots.
The medal comes on an original suspension device, a WW2 two-layer model in steel with self-locking pin. The connecting link appears to be original, and its ends are still joined with solder. The perfectly preserved and clean is recent but does show some age.
To summarize, this is a truly superb example of the Variation 1 Defense of Moscow Medal - one of the very best we've ever offered and, in our opinion, practically impossible to upgrade.
