The Battle against Germans at Avgustov, WW1 lithographic poster, late 1914.

Large lithographic print measuring 21 ½" x 16 ½", printed by the I. Sytin Lithography Partnership, Moscow. The captions under the artwork provide some details of the depicted battle: "The German attempt to cross the Neman and get into the rear of our troops in Poland by cutting the railroad lines from Moscow and Petrograd ended in a huge defeat for them. The captions under the artwork provide some details of the depicted battle: "The German attempt to cross the Neman and get into the rear of our troops in Poland by cutting the railroad lines from Moscow and Petrograd ended in a huge defeat for them. Thrown back from the Neman, the Germans were making desperate attempts to hinder the momentum of our troops. An especially fierce battle took place near the city of Avgustov. The Germans were kicked out by the fire of our artillery and a bayonet charge and thrown toward their border. The total German losses in battles for the Neman at a very conservative estimate equal 65,000 killed, wounded, or taken prisoner. We captured artillery pieces, machine guns and armored automobiles."

In very good to excellent condition, showing minor fraying and small tears to the margins, mostly to the top and left edge, easily repairable if desired. A few more significant tears have been repaired and reinforced with acid-free library tape as seen in our photo. The colors are vibrant, the color overlay very precise, the captions are crisp and perfectly legible.

The poster was a morale booster, informing the public about the counteroffensive of the Russian 10th Army near the Polish town of Avgustov (Polish spelling "Augustow") after the disastrous Battle of Tannenberg (23 - 30 August 1914) and a series of lost follow-up battles at the Masurian Lakes south of Koenigsberg.

Please note that the 1-ft. ruler in our photo is for size reference.
