The Northwestern Front ("Front" being a Russian term for Army Group) was one of the sole two original fronts (the other being the Northern front) created with the purpose of combating the Finnish forces. The front included the 8th, 11th, and 27th armies at the time of its formation, along with the Air Force of the Baltic region. Initially in 1941, the Northwestern Front was responsible for combating the troops of the German Army Groups "North" and "Center", the latter of which being the strongest of the three groups comprising the Nazi forces in the war. More specifically, the front was to split the German 18th and 16th armies and support the Volkhov and Leningrad Fronts at the Siege of Leningrad. It was also to conduct a southwestern thrust toward the city of Vitebsk. In 1941, the front seized the city of Staraya Russa, an important communications center, but could not maintain control. Later, troops returned to reclaim the city in what turned into an 880-day effort. In 1942, the front sought to sever the communication line of the German 16th Army, which was the Staraya Russa railway, though the Germans resisted this offensive. Finally, in 1943, the front was successful in Staraya Russa when it encircled the Wehrmacht's II Army Corp in the Demyansk Pocket as part of the Toropets-Kohlm Offensive.
