Order of Lenin, Type 5, Variation 2 (Durov Type IV, Variation 1, Sub-Variation 2), #25276, awarded on 21 February 1945 to Lieutenant Colonel Vasiliy Pashutin (Василий Иванович Пашутин), a Department Chief at the Leningrad Antiaircraft Artillery Technical School.

In solid 23 K gold, platinum and enamels. Measures 43.0 mm in height (incl. the eyelet), 38.3 mm in width; weighs 33.5 g not including the suspension and connecting link. Unlike the much more common Variation 1, this version features flat reverse without the circular "dimple" depression in the center. The serial number is stamped in the upper part of the reverse, in the manner standard for its type.

In very fine condition, very respectable for a WW2 issue and especially for the scarce "no dimple" version of the order. There is a single small chip to the red banner at the upper edge immediately below the eyelet, the usual vulnerable spot. There are also a few tiny hairlines in the same area and several minuscule surface flakes elsewhere along the upper edge, the latter practically invisible to the naked eye. The red enamel on the banner, star and band around the center medallion is otherwise perfect, free of surface rubbing, and shows a beautiful luster throughout. The grey enamel on the background is pristine.

The golden wreath and platinum bas-relief are free of significant dings, having perfect and crisp details. The reverse is likewise practically pristine and shows an attractive toning to the gold. The order comes with an original suspension, a WW2 two-layer model in steel with self-locking pin. The perfectly clean ribbon, although relatively recent, shows some age. The connecting link appears to be of the period, and although deformed by the weight of the medallion, remains intact with its ends still joined with solder.

Vasiliy Pashutin was born in 1896 in the city of Vitebsk, Belorussia. At the beginning of the Civil War in 1918, he enlisted in the Red Army and became a career military officer. He apparently escaped the fate of many other Red Army professional cadres and was never persecuted, receiving the Medal for 20th Anniversary of RKKA in 1938. In November 1944, he was decorated with the Order of the Red Banner and in February 1945, the Order of Lenin, both for length of service in the military. These were his only high decorations of the war beside the Medal for Victory over Germany. At the time of being awarded Pashutin had the rank of lieutenant colonel and was in charge of the military training program, essentially a department chief, at the Leningrad Antiaircraft Artillery Technical School. As of February 1946, Lt. Col. Pashutin was still on active duty as senior tactics instructor at the same school (his apparent demotion was possibly due to the surplus of professional military officers left in the wake of WW2). He apparently retired from the military soon thereafter, apparently due to an illness or wound.
