The title of People's Performance Artist of Armenian SSR was established in 1931, one of relatively few such titles that came up prior to WW2.
The title was extremely hard to earn, and apparently only approximately 70 people ever achieved this honor before the breakup of the USSR and
abolition of the award. In the hierarchy of levels of recognition, it was above the Distinguished Performance Artist of Armenian SSR and next
only to the all-Union title of People's Performance Artist of the USSR. The medal first appeared much later than the title itself, apparently
in the 1980s.
