Large 16 ½" x 24 ¼" lithographic print in the lubok style, popular in Russia at the time. The artist's name, Alexander Noskov, is in the lower right-hand corner. Published by I. As evidenced by the inscription in red at the bottom of the left margin, the print was approved by military censure on 10 January, 1915 by the Julian calendar then in use in Russia, or 23 January by the Gregorian calendar used today.

In very good condition. The paper is better-quality than you would expect from a lubok but still rather thin, so some fraying and tears to the edges are evident, and a piece of the left margin is missing. However, the missing piece is far from the artwork, and all the tears have been repaired on the verso with library tape. The colors are vibrant and crisp, with more colors and shades nicely matched.

During WW1, lubok prints - colorful illustrations of an event, often accompanied by descriptive text - provided Russians with visual interpretations of events on the frontlines, and were widely used as a propaganda tool to bolster morale. The episode depicted in this lithograph took place around 3 January 1915 (16 January by the Gregorian calendar). On January 2nd, Russia began a major offensive against Austria-Hungary in the Carpathians as part of the general plan to strengthen its flanks in Galicia before driving further westward toward Silesia. While later than winter Russia's preparations in the north of the Eastern Front to advance into East Prussia were thwarted by Ludendorff striking eastward and enveloping four Russian divisions in the Augustow forests, the Russian army continued to press forward in the south, in Galicia, culminating in the capture of Przemyśl in late March.
