In excellent condition, outstanding for a Russo-Japanese War issue. The details of the center medallion, both the cypher and the figure of St. George, are very well preserved and crisp, showing only very minimal wear to the high points. There are several tiny dings to the raised edge of the medallion and arms, as well as a few minuscule scratches on the arms, but all of these are nearly unnoticeable to the unaided eye. The edges of the cross are free of nicks or bumps. There is an extremely attractive dark patina to silver on both sides. To reiterate, the condition of this Cross is excellent by any standard - and very uncommon for an award for the Russo-Japanese War.

The name, rank and unit of the recipient as well as the serial number of the award are listed in the Russian language catalog Badge of Distinction of the Military Order of St. George. List of Those Awarded for the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905 by I. Maryakin and D. Butrym, C. 2006. The award citation states that the award was bestowed upon Private Grishin, an infantryman in the 4th Company of the 4th Rifle Regiment, for "valor and bravery he had shown on different occasions in the battles against the Japanese".

Grishin's regiment was deployed on the Far East in October 1904 but took part in combat only starting from January of the next year. As part of the Combined Rifle Corps (later, 1st Combined Rifle Corps) of the 2nd Manchurian Army, the regiment took part in the Battle of Mukden in February - March 1905. Although this great battle ended in a humiliating and unexpected rout of the Russian Army (due in large part to incompetence of its senior command) and eventually led to the Russian defeat in the war, the 4th Regiment acquitted itself well throughout the conflict. One of its four battalions was even decorated with a special scroll "For Mukden" that its servicemen would later wear on their dress hats, while another received a similar decoration with inscription "For the War with Japan in 1904-1905".
