Table medal in memory of Mikhail Lomonosov, one of the greatest Russian scientists.

In bronze, measures 56.6 mm wide, weighs 152 g. The artwork in high 3D relief is typical of table medals of the Soviet era. The obverse features a portrait of the scientist in high 3D relief.
The reverse features a compilation of various scientific tools, symbolizing the unbelievably wide gamut of Lomonosov's interests and contributions to Russian science, engineering, language and art. The inscription on the left side reads "Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov 1711-1765".

The author of the medal as well as its circulation are unknown. It is not registered in Commemorative [Table] Medal of the Soviet Period, 1919 - 1991 which makes us believe that it may be quite rare, if not unique.

In superb condition. The raised details are extremely crisp. The entire surface of the medal is completely free of any blemish or wear.

In the pantheon of Russian science Mikhail Lomonosov is a head above everyone else. He was a true polymath, making amazing contributions of immense impact in very different spheres: physics, chemistry, architecture, poetry, linguistics, geography, tool crafting, metallurgy, geology, history, - the list goes on. Son of a farmer from Northern Russia, he became an active member of the St.-Petersburg Imperial Academy of Sciences (1745) and an honorary member of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences and the Bologna Academy of Science in Italy.
