Excellent Tanker badge, circa 1942-44 issue.

Brass, enamels; measures 46.0 mm tall x 36.5 mm wide. This is an early type of the Tanker's badge, featuring characteristically crude wreath and domed center medallion. Note also the "streamlined" construction of the cannon and especially the stylized tank turret. The top ornament is formed by five scrolls with a border defining the upper edge.

Note also the "streamlined" construction of the cannon and especially the stylized tank turret. The top ornament is formed by five scrolls with a border defining the upper edge. This version is listed as NKPS in the Airapetyan's catalog (although it is now believed to have been also manufactured by a couple of other makers including the Shcherbinsky Stamping Factory.)

In excellent condition, very uncommon for a "Combat Proficiency" award of WW2 era. The red enamel is extremely well preserved showing very nice luster and none of the usual scratches, chips or flaking. The white band has a tiny unfilled area near the top which appears to be a manufacturing imperfection rather than damage. There are some tiny contact marks and some embedded dust, but no significant wear.

The wreath and details of the tank are likewise beautifully preserved and crisp, with the original gilt finish intact and bright. The fragile grey finish on the edge of the shield and on the scrolls is also intact. The silver finish on the reverse of the badge is essentially pristine. The screw post is full length, over 12 mm, and fully functional. Note that the black compound around its base is factory-applied, not a repair. The badge comes with original WW2 era NKPS screw plate which fits the screw perfectly. Overall, this piece is a truly outstanding example of WW2 Soviet Tanker's badge.
