Poland, Medal for Protecting Peace, Gold Grade (1st class), late 1970s - 1980s.

In gilded brass, 38.3 mm wide. Massive and very attractive piece. The obverse shows inscription "Guarding Peace" and "Baltic, Oder, Neisse" - i.e. the sea and rivers marking Polish western and northern frontier. In excellent, near mint condition. Includes well-preserved old ribbon.

Established in 1975, this medal was awarded primarily to Soviet troops stationed in People's Republic of Poland and occasionally, officers of other Warsaw Pact countries. Some were issued to Soviet KGB and Border Guard officers.
