The top photo shows a panorama of the liberated city while the photos below show Soviet naval infantry, torpedo boats in action and the fireworks in Moscow celebrating this important victory. Also presented are two naval officers awarded with the Title of Hero of the Soviet Union for fighting at Novorossiysk.
The poster measures 24 ½ " x 22". Very good to excellent condition. There are a few holes down the left hand side where the poster was probably bound together with others in the series - the holes are small and do not detract. There is very minor amount of damage in two small areas at the bottom margin, not affecting the image and almost unnoticeable. There are also one or two light folds that appear to have been flattened out a long time ago. The poster has been shrink wrapped on to what appears to be acid free cardboard backing. Note that when we ship it, we will send it "sandwiched" between two sturdy pieces of cardboard of appropriate side, carefully sealed on the edges to prevent any water damage. The poster will be ready for display when you receive it!
Novorossiysk was an important seaport and naval base on the
doorstep to the Caucasus. Much of the city was captured by
the Germans during their sweeping southern offensive in the
summer of 1942, but its southeastern outskirts marked the
limit of Axis advance along the shore of the Black Sea.
Novorossiysk then saw bitter fighting for many months with
neither side being able to make a decisive breakthrough or
regain full use of its port. For much of 1943, the city
served as the southern anchor of the Nazi defensive "Blue
Line" on the Taman Peninsula. Its liberation in October 1943
was deemed a major success for the Red Army and Navy, and
brought the Soviet troops to the doorsteps of the Crimea.
