Badge of a Military Doctor awarded a Doctorate at a Russian University or at the Imperial Medical and Surgical Academy, 1908-1917.

Badge of a Military Doctor awarded a Doctorate at a Russian University or at the Imperial Medical and Surgical Academy, 1908-1917.

In silver gilt. Measures 59.3 mm in height, 43.6 mm in width (between the edges of the wreath in its widest section); weight 18.5 g not including the washer and wing nut; total weight with the washer and nut is 24.3 g. Multi-piece construction. The double-headed eagle is superimposed on the stamped wreath. The gilded chalice - often referred to as Goblet of Aesculapius (or "Eskulap") in Russian sources - is likewise a separate part, and so are the gilded serpents held to the wreath by four sets of leaves. Each of these sets (consisting of three leaves per set) is also a separate superimposed part ingeniously wrapped around the wreath to provide firm connection.

The beautifully sculptured ensemble shows enormous attention to detail by its craftsman, including fully discernable provincial coats of arms on the double-headed eagle emblem, veins of the leaves, feathers of the eagle etc.

Stamped near the bottom on the obverse of the wreath (to the right of the chalice) is an "84" silver hallmark with Kokoshnik facing right (poorly struck but nevertheless easily identifiable.) Next to it as an additional, smaller circular Kokoshnik assayer's hallmark which has clearly visible vertical dash behind the lady's neck, designation of the Odessa assay inspection. On the reverse of the wreath (left side, closer to the bottom) is Cyrillic maker mark А.Ф. ("AF") of an unknown Odessa jeweler.

The badge includes original washer showing a matching Kokoshnik hallmark and maker mark "AF". The original wing nut in silver has the same Kokoshnik hallmark of the Odessa assay inspection as the badge and washer.

The badge is in outstanding, excellent condition. All of its parts are present and firmly attached. The details of the eagle, wreath and individual leaves are perfectly preserved and exceptionally crisp showing no wear visible to the naked eye. Even the crown and in particular the exposed cross at its top - the most vulnerable spot of many Russian badges - are intact. The original gold plating on the snakes and chalice is still clearly visible. There is very attractive patina to silver throughout; as would be expected, it is lighter on the less exposed reverse of the badge. In terms of its condition and completeness, a better example of an Imperial Russian Medical Doctor's badge simply cannot be found!
