Medical School Military Department graduate badge, Type 1,
Silver gilt, enamels, 4-piece construction; 46.1 x 26.6 mm.
Type 1, featuring wire attachment of the star.
In very fine to excellent condition. The enamel is perfect
with the exception of a tiny surface chip at the upper tip
of the red star that is not penetrating to silver and
practically unnoticeable to the naked eye. The details of
the state emblem are beautifully crisp, and its original
gilt finish is extremely well preserved. The wires holding
the parts of the badge together are completely intact and
tight. Nice dark patina to silver throughout. The screw
is full length, approx. 11 mm. Includes original mint
screw plate in silver. Overall, a very attractive piece.
The military departments were created in 1939 in selected
medical schools specifically with the purpose of training
career military doctors (even though all holders of medical
degree had reserve officer ranks and were called to active
duty when needed).
