Guards Badge, NKPS Factory version, circa mid-1940s.

Brass, enamels; measures 46.1 x 36.2 mm; weighs 17.4 g without the screw plate. Like the other wartime versions, this Guard's badge lacks the fringe at the bottom of the banner; the upper and lower edges of the banner are completely smooth. This version of the badge is one of several produced by the NKPS (Narkomat of Railroads) factory and is a so-called "Classic Oval" according to Airapetyan's classification. It features a pattern of horizontal dashes positioned in checkerboard fashion to the metal surface underneath. The wreath is in a characteristically high 3- d profile. This version of the badge is believed to be among the earliest produced.

In very fine to excellent condition, far better than most surviving Guard's badges of WW2 era. The red enamel on the banner and star shows a moderate amount of surface rubbing, few minor contact marks and a single minuscule, nearly unnoticeable surface flake in the lower left corner, while being completely free of the usual chips, significant flaking or any other noticeable damage. The white enamel displays a beautiful luster and is practically free of visible wear, having only a couple of minuscule contact marks.

The wreath has only a minor amount of wear to the high points; its details are nicely preserved and some of its original gilt finish is still clearly visible in recessed areas. The screw post is full length, approx. 13.5 mm, and comes with an original WW2 era screw plate in brass- plated steel with NKPS ShMZ logo (which stands for "Mechanical Stamping Factory, Narkomat of Roads of Transportation".)
