In sterling silver. Measures 50.0 mm in diameter, weighs 75.7 g. The rim shows stylized stamped mint mark "LMD" (Leningrad Mint) and silver hallmark "925". Beautiful artwork in high relief by die-cutter V. Akimushkina shows a cosmonaut, male and female workers holding a sheath of wheat, the Spasskaya Tower of Kremlin, an industrial plant in the background, and a banner with Lenin's profile at the top. The depiction of a cosmonaut is an unusual feature certainly meant to emphasize the Soviet leadership in space exploration (before the American moon landings). Raised lettering on the reverse reads: "In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the Soviet rule in the USSR".

The medal is in outstanding, excellent condition. It is completely free of wear visible to the naked eye; there are only a few microscopic contact marks that are hard to find even with a 10x loupe and completely unnoticeable without magnification. The details of the artwork are perfect and exceptionally crisp. The raised edge is free of the usual dings or bumps. There is a very attractive patina throughout, darker on recessed areas and thus making a nice contrast with the raised points.

The case is of very nice quality (unlike the plain cardboard or plastic issue boxes for the vast majority of Soviet orders, medals and badges), bound in fine red leather. The lid is lined in silk; the fitted nest for the medal is in crimson velvet with a red silk tape for lifting the medal. Condition of the case is superb. It shows practically no wear to the exterior, only a couple of very tiny scuffs that are barely noticeable. The leather retains a beautiful gloss. The interior is perfectly clean and fresh. The locking mechanism is fully functional.
