M 1955 Air Force officer dress visor hat, 1955-58.
The crown in navy blue wool gabardine is
characteristically small, of the early style. The band
and piping are in slightly napped sky blue wool. Gold
chin cord. Early style rounded visor with "scrambled
eggs" motif in anodized aluminum. Early two-piece
construction, combination hat badge with aluminum wreath
and center piece in brass and enamels. Clean, totally
legible sweat diamond of the TsEP Factory in Moscow is
marked size 57 (US size 7 1/8).
Interestingly, this hat never had a set of wings attached
to its crown (there is no trace of it on either the front
or the liner), so it was clearly used by a non-flying
officer. The wings can be added of course by the new
owner if desired.
The hat is in very good condition. It has kept its
sadddle shape beautifully. The underside of the crown has
a couple of tiny moth holes that would be practically
unnoticeable when the hat is on display, while the top of
the crown and band are completely free of mothing. The
exterior is immaculately clean; the liner and sweat band
are likewise fresh and clean. The metal motif on the
visor is perfect and tightly attached
This attractive early hat was used for only a brief
period from 1955-58. A very uncommon find in decent size
and problem free condition.
