Large color lithograph of the Velikiy (Great) Novgorod Kremlin, circa 1980s, hand-signed artist's proof.

Measures almost 18" x 16", the image is approx. 14" x 11". In color, depicting а bucolic river view of the Kremlin in the city of Velikiy Novgorod, possibly as it looked a couple of centuries ago on a windy and rather bleak summer day in northern Russia. The artist's handwritten signature, in pencil, is under the image, bottom right. Unfortunately, the signature is too vague to identify the artist.

The image is in pristine condition. The paper around it has acquired a few faint discoloration spots and lines, not really detractive.

The name of the city, Великий Новгород, means "Great New City" if translated literally. In fact though, it is one of the oldest Russian cities. Not an easy honor in this ancient land. The officially recognized date of its foundation is 859 when it was first mentioned in a 16th-century chronicle. In an earlier, 12th-century, chronicle, the city is mentioned related to the year 862. But perhaps what added the term "Great" to its name was not its age but that in 1136 it became the first free republic on the territory of the feudal Russia. During WW2, it was occupied and almost completely demolished by the Nazis but was later rebuilt, many historic buildings restored. It is located approximately 360 miles north-west of Moscow, and its current population is roughly 224 thousand.
