Medal for Victory over Japan, Variation 1, #5586, late
1940s.
In gilded brass and enamels, stamped serial number to the
reverse (note the relatively low serial number even for the
Variation 1). Medallion measures 42.4 mm tall (incl.
eyelet), 39.5 mm wide. This is the first version of the
medal featuring concaved reverse. Excellent quality
throughout.
In excellent condition - very uncommon for this award. The
gilt is nicely preserved and bright on both the obverse and
reverse. The enamel on the star and white Soembo emblem is
essentially perfect, free of the usual chips or flaking. The
enamel on the suspension has only microscopic contact marks,
otherwise pristine (there are couple of tiny spots where it
appears uneven due to manufacturing imperfections - this is
not a result of wear.) The screw post is of full length,
nearly 14 mm, and includes original screw plate marked
"Moscow Artists Cooperative".
