Oder of the Polar Star, Type 3 Variation 2, #277, circa 1946 issue.
Silver gilt, enamels; measures 53.1 mm in height, 46.2 mm in width; weighs 42.7 g not including the screw plate. Early variation featuring highly concave reverse with clearly visible counter-relief of the rays. The serial number is engraved in characteristically early style, at 7 o'clock position. The extremely low serial number of this piece indicates that this is one of the first series of the Type 3 Polar Stars which replaced Type 2 (1940) model. The Type 4 orders were manufactured by the Soviet Mint starting from 1945; first of them - including almost certainly this specimen - were issued by the Mongolian authorities in July 1946. Note also that the early issue date makes it more likely to be a WW2 combat award as opposed to many Polar Stars awarded later for length of service, both military and civilian.
In excellent condition. The enamel is beautifully preserved and has no flaws visible to the naked eye. There are a few microscopic surface flakes to the white scrolls, but they are completely unnoticeable without a magnifying glass. The enamel on the center medallion is perfect. There raised parts of the center medallion are exceptionally crisp, show almost no wear - a very uncommon case, especially for the early version of the award. The original gold plating on the starburst is nicely preserved and bright. There is attractive dark toning to the reverse. The screw post is full length, approximately 15 mm, and includes original silver screw plate. Overall, this is a very uncommon early piece in premium condition!
