Order of St Stanislaus, Military Division, 2nd class neck badge with original gold loop; by Albert Keibel, 1899-1903.

Order of St Stanislaus, Military Division, 2nd class neck badge with original gold loop; by Albert Keibel, 1899-1903.

Gold, enamels. Measures 50.7 mm in height (incl. eyelet), 47.4 mm wide (between the opposing ball finials of the horizontal arms). Weighs 20.1 g not including the connecting loop, 21.5 g with the loop. Marked "AK" (Albert Keibel) on the reverse lower arm and shows Imperial Double-headed Eagle warrant to the reverse upper arm. Gold hallmark "56" to the eyelet, with early style Kokoshnik facing left and clearly visible Cyrillic character "Ya", the first letter of the initials "Ya.L" of St. Petersburg assay inspector Yakov Lyapunov. The name of the assayer indicates the period of manufacture between 1899 and 1903. The magnificent, translucent scarlet enamel is of typical, early Keibel quality. The swords were clearly added later, but judging by their quality, method of attachment and patina on both the swords and surrounding areas, they are almost certainly of the period. The addition of swords to a civilian decoration was rather typical in the period of Russo-Japanese War, when there was suddenly a sharply increased demand for military awards.

The order is in very fine to excellent condition. The red enamel appears perfect to the unaided eye and retains beautiful luster. There are a few microscopic flakes at the far edges of the upper right arm and a single hairline in the same area, but none of this is visible without a loupe or threatens the stability of the enamel. The red enamel is free of chips, scratches, buffing or other significant wear. Both sides of the center medallion are perfect. The green leaves in the band have minor losses as is usually the case, but this is not at all detractive to the overall appearance of the award.

The eagles have crisp details and show beautiful toning to the gold. The reverse is free of visible scratches or dings. There is also beautiful contrasting patina to the swords. The badge comes on original gold suspension loop.

Note that this piece was made when Keibel jewelry firm was the sole supplier for the Kapitul (Chancellery) of the Imperial Russian Orders. Furthermore, the 1899-1903 period of manufacture makes it almost certain that the order would be available for issue during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905.
