Catalog of Hallmarks on Items in Precious Metals, 1917-
2000 (USSR and Russia). N. Troepol'skaya. C. 2006,
Moscow. Russian text. Massive volume, 8 1/4" x 10 1/2" x 1
1/2" format, hardcover, 717 pp.
The book contains a guide to over 22000 individual
hallmarks. This extraordinary work is essentially a
continuation of the "Russian Gold and Silverwork" by
Postnikova-Loseva et al on Imperial hallmarks. However, it
has some great additional features. Among them are complete
sets of laws and regulations concerning the hallmarks in
their 1908, 1947, 1954, 1965, 1995 versions, plus excerpts
from later decrees. Seventeen pages are dedicated solely to
magnified close-up photos of hallmarks from various periods.
The main body of the catalog is conveniently organized
numerically and alphabetically, with the precise name and
location of the maker, assay inspection authority and date
of manufacture. There is also a separate table of hallmarks
containing graphic symbols, organized chronologically.
Lastly, there is an index of the names of all individual
workmasters mentioned in the book.
This book will allow the reader to pinpoint the date of
manufacture and maker by practically any Soviet or post-
Soviet Russian hallmark. OUTSTANDING and INVALUABLE out
of print reference! Absolutely indispensable to anyone
collecting early Soviet badges, Russian jewelry, gold /
silver watches or period works of art made of precious
