Friendship Medal, #1497, circa late 1960s.

Friendship Medal, #1497, circa late 1960s.

Silver, enamels; 36.2 mm wide; weighs 30.8 g including the suspension. Extremely nice quality. Shows shaking hands, ribbon forming Mongolian national ornament, green leaves underneath, and Cyrillic writing "Nairamdal" at the top. Engraved number to the reverse.

Excellent condition. The fragile green enamel is perfect, and so is the enamel on the suspension device. There are only a few microscopic dings to the silver, no wear visible to the naked eye. Very attractive patina to silver throughout. The connecting link between the eyelet and suspension appears to be original, and its ends are still joined with solder.

This medal is from the first batch of 6000 Nairamdal Medals manufactured at the Soviet Mint in April1967 and delivered to Mongolia during the same year. All or most of the medals from the first batch had been issued within a couple of years judging by the fact that the follow-up order for the second batch of 7000 was placed in 1970. Nearly all of these were awarded to foreigners, primarily Soviet citizens, with only a handful bestowed upon Mongols.
