Order of St Anne, Civil Division, 3rd class breast badge, by Albert Keibel, 1882-1899.

Order of St Anne, Civil Division, 3rd class breast badge, by Albert Keibel, 1882-1899.

In gold and enamels. Measures 39.2 mm in height including the eyelet, 34.9 mm in width ; weighs 8.5 grams not including the connecting loop and ribbon; the loop weighs 0.3 g.

Features beautifully executed center medallion, far more detailed and colorful than the later issues of the same award. The translucent red enamel on the arms of the cross is likewise of trademark early quality. There are very clearly visible maker mark "AK" under red enamel on the reverse lower and double-headed eagle warrant on the reverse upper arm. The eyelet shows gold hallmark "56" with the crossed anchors and scepter of the St. Petersburg assay inspection. Combined with the "AK" maker mark, this type of gold hallmark indicates the period of manufacture between 1882 (when Albert Keibel inherited the jewelry firm from his father Julius) and 1899 (when the style of assay marks changed to "Kokoshnik").

In outstanding, excellent condition - one of the best specimens we have seen. There red enamel shows literally no traces of wear that would be visible even under 10x loupe; it is entirely free of even the usual microscopic contact marks or flakes.

The center medallion is pristine and retains lovely vibrant original colors. The enamel shows beautiful luster throughout. The vignettes between the arms and medallion are original and firmly attached. The badge comes with unmarked loop in gold which is believed to be of the period and probably original to the order, mounted on an original St. Anne ribbon. The ribbon measuring approx. 17 cm in length is slightly faded and shows wear but is nevertheless sound and very attractive. To reiterate, condition wise, this superb example of the Order of St. Anne simply cannot be upgraded.
