Honored NKVD Firefighter badge, Type 2, #431, 1937-1941 issue.

Honored NKVD Firefighter badge, Type 2, #431, 1937-1941 issue.

In sterling silver and enamels; 49.3 x 29.8 mm. This stunning piece shows absolutely superb quality throughout. The three-piece construction badge features oval base having cogwheel along the left border, ears of wheat along the right red scroll with Cyrillic letters "NKVD" at the bottom and red banner near the top. The state emblem at the top is of 1937 type, with 11 ribbons representing number of republics in the Soviet Union. The red star is a separate part attached with wires; superimposed on the star is beautifully sculptured Soviet fire department insignia of torch, ax and wrench. The reverse has Cyrillic maker mark "VKKh" and sterling silver hallmark "916". Note the typical low serial number engraved in characteristically "square" font (only a few hundred of silver badges were ever issued).

In very fine condition, extraordinary for this early award. The enamel on the scroll with "NKVD" has a small chip: a thin, barely noticeable sliver along the lower border under the letter "K". The enamel is practically perfect elsewhere - the only exception is faint hairline cracks in the lower left arm of the star that are not visually detracting and do not threaten the integrity of the enamel. The enamel retains its luster and beautiful trademark quality characteristic of the early Soviet badges.

The torch, state emblem and other details are extremely crisp, show practically no wear. Pristine, even toning to the reverse. The screw post is full length, approx. 11 mm. Comes with original silver wing nut marked "Vsekokhudozhnik, Moscow" and showing "916" silver and "VKKh" hallmarks. The nut is somewhat loose due to worn threads (as is often the case) but still holds to the screw post reasonably well.
