"NKVD of USSR, 1934-1937: Structure, Command, Uniforms, Insignia" Valentin Voronov , Andrey Shishkin.

"NKVD of USSR, 1934-1937: Structure, Command, Uniforms, Insignia" Valentin Voronov , Andrey Shishkin. C. 2005, Moscow. In Russian. Hard cover with d/j, 286 pp, large format: 12" by 8 3/4".

This encyclopedic work covers Soviet State Security apparatus during its most turbulent period: from the foundation of NKVD in 1934 through the peak of Ezhov's "Great Purge" in 1937. The era was marked by the unprecedented repressions conducted by NKVD not only against general population but - to even large extent - against its own ranks (During 1937 and in the following year 86% of the top NKVD commanders were arrested and eventually executed). Not coincidentally, some significant changes to NKVD uniforms also happened during these years.

The book contains hundreds of high quality illustrations and period photographs, supplemented with color photos of actual examples in private collections. Illustrative material is accompanied by detailed descriptions. There is a wealth of information not only on uniforms and insignia but also all kinds of accessories and field gear. All NKVD branches are covered, including Internal Security, Border Guards, NKVD schools, State Security Special Departments, NKVD Troops, Naval Border Guards and NKVD Aviation units.

This high quality publication also provides detailed view into history of the organization, with names, photos and biographies of its leadership. Literally hundreds of higher level operatives are identified by name, position, ethnicity and social origin. There is a convenient index of names and glossary of abbreviations at the end of the book.

This extraordinary reference is a "must have" resource for the historian and uniform collector alike. Highly recommended!
