The acronym VEF stands for "Valsts Eelektrotehniskā Fabrika" (State Electrotechnical Factory). It was founded in 1919, and grew after WW2 into the leading communications technology producer in the Soviet Union and the largest factory in the Latvian SSR which manufactured a wide variety of electrical and electronic products.
