Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy or ВДНХ (VDNKh) Keepsake or Souvenir Box, circa 1959.
Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy or ВДНХ (VDNKh) Keepsake or Souvenir Box, circa 1959. Features a view of the main building of the VDNKh fairgrounds in Moscow. Made of a white bakelite type of plastic.
7 1/8" x 7 3/8" x 2 3/4". Lid shows first building visitors still see after walking through the main gate (our photo was taken in 2006 - with the exception of the removal of the letters "CCCP" from the front, the building was completely unchanged). Exceedingly sturdy white plastic with equally sturdy metal hinges. Manufacturer's logo impressed on the bottom.
Excellent condition. Very light wear, probably only used as a keepsake box on a dresser or a desk by its original owner.
If you are unfamiliar with the exhibition, it can only be described a sort of perpetual Soviet World's Fair. It opened in 1939 as the All-Union Agricultural Exhibition (VSKhV) but was closed during WW2. It did not reopen until 1954. In 1959, the complex was renamed the Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy or ВДНХ (VDNKh). Finally, in 1992, it became the "All-Russia Exhibition Centre". Tourists wanting to have a truly "Soviet" experience in today's Moscow should skip the disappointing park of discarded socialist statues and book a visit to the "Exhibition Centre" instead.
