Fifty Year Anniversary of the Stakhanovite Movement in 1985, Table Medal in Bronze, struck in 1989 at the Leningrad Mint with an unknown mintage.

Fifty Year Anniversary of the Stakhanovite Movement in 1985, Table Medal in Bronze, struck in 1989 at the Leningrad Mint with an unknown mintage.

59.6mm. On the obverse, Stakhanov with two other miners. Stakhanov hard at work on the reverse, his name at the top and "Donbass", his region, at the bottom.

    Excellent condition.

Stakhanov was a 1930's Soviet worker who reportedly mined 102 tons of coal all by himself in less than 6 hours. Interestingly, by the late 1980s, the Party more or less admitted that Stakhanov's statistics had been rigged to make him look like a super-worker: other miners, possibly without his knowledge, chipped in to help him reach phenomenally high quotas. The fact that this medal was released at virtually the same time as his legend was being debunked indicates that it may have been struck at the insistence of party loyalists.

    /"Commemorative [Table] Medal of the Soviet Period, 1919 - 1991", A. Shkurko, A. Salykov, fig. 1850/.
