Opening of Monument to Alexander II in Helsingfors [Finland] 1894 Table Medal in Bronze.

69.4 mm wide; weighs 147.8 grams. Engraved by A. Griliches. Obverse inscribed "Alexander II Imperator et Magnus Princeps" (Alexander II Emperor and Grand Duke). Reverse shows monument to Alexander and is inscribed "Majora Ipse Sui Solus Posuit Monumenta" (to the greatness of him alone this monument is put in place) and "Auspiciis Alexandri Fenna Grata MDCCCXCIV" (Under the Auspices of Alexander III to Please Finland).

Very fine to excellent condition. No edge knocks, no spotting and the medal displays the unusual but attractive color associated with

Do not be put off by the fact that the mottoes are in Latin and rendered in Latin letters; Finland was firmly in the Russian Empire at this point in time and the construction of this statue of Alexander II was intended as a sign of Finnish loyalty to the Romanovs!
