50th Anniversary of the Soviet Union, Table Medal in
sterling silver and enamel, with fitted case of issue, 1972.
Massive size, superb quality piece in Sterling silver and
enamel. Measures 55.2 mm in diameter, 4.1 mm thick at the
edge; weighs 92.5 g. Beautiful sculptured artwork is by S.
Pamanskiy and V. Nikitin.
The obverse shows portrait of Lenin in his trademark pose,
with red Soviet flag underneath, and legend "50th
Anniversary of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics".
Reverse shows Soviet state emblem in high relief. The USSR
emblem is surrounded by state seals of each of the
republics, also executed in fine detail. Shows silver
hallmark "925" and Leningrad mint mark "LMD" on the edge.
Comes with original case in maroon plastic with nickel
plated plaque showing embossed state emblem of the USSR.
Lined in red velvet with fitted nest for the medal.
The medal is in very fine to excellent condition. The
sculptured details of the medal are perfect and crisp, show
no significant wear. The enamel has only a few tiny
scratches that are nearly unnoticeable to the naked eye but
it is completely free of the usual flaking or chips, retains
beautiful luster. The raised edge has two small dings, at
approximately 3 and 8 o'clock positions, neither of them
very noticeable or detractive.
The plastic case is completely sound; the nickel plating on
the plaque with the Soviet state emblem is bright and shows
only minimal wear. The interior is perfectly clean. As is
usually the case, the latch of the lid is won't lock when
the medal is inside but the box will still close tightly
once it's empty.
The table medal was issued to a few selected VIPs on the
occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the creation of the
Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in 1972.
