40th Anniversary of the Victory over Germany 1985 Souvenir Veteran's Medal & Order Storage Box, with artist's rendering of the Order of Victory with patriotic motifs on the lid, with two storage areas.
Veneered plywood and fibreboard, 14 14" x 6 3/8" x 2 ¼". Lid has brass piano hinge and opens to reveal an area at the top with space for the veteran to keep his orders, medals, and badges. There is a lower drawer on the front; it is about ¾" deep and it provides the proper space to hold a veteran's order booklet and award certificates. On the bottom of the box, a Ukrainian manufacturer's label identifies this as a "Souvenir Box for Orders and Medals". It also shows that the box had a rather considerable price of 15 Rubles. A rubber stamp on the label seems to indicate a manufacture date of 1987, which would indicate that this container was a popular item that remained in production well after the actual 40th anniversary celebrations were over. Four wooden feet attached to the bottom.
Very good to excellent condition. There are a few tiny places where the finish shows minimal wear but they could probably be easily retouched. A tiny part of the wooden knob on the front of the drawer has broken away. This does not seriously detract from the box's "look" since the viewer's eye goes immediately to the artwork on the lid. (If desired, a person with basic woodworking skills could probably replace the knob - perhaps with a plain brass knob.)
Frankly, this would be the perfect container to house an entire collection of Soviet WW2 campaign medals, a collection of Soviet Second World War Veteran Badges, or an important grouping of one Soviet soldier's WW2 medals and his paperwork.
Please note: the awards and the papers in the photographs are only there to give you an idea of the box's size and are not included with the box.
