Oil Portrait of Aleksei Kosygin (1904 - 1980) Premier of the Soviet Union from 1964 to 1980.

Oil Portrait of Aleksei Kosygin (1904 - 1980) Premier of the Soviet Union from 1964 to 1980. Large painting dated 1976 that no doubt once hung on a Soviet office wall next to portraits of Lenin and Brezhnev.

35 " x 27 ". Excellent condition. Well executed product of the Soviet assembly line system of portrait production created to meet the ongoing demand for portraits to display in government offices, schools, and on military bases. (Since he would have been 72 at the time this painting was produced, chances are that the artist based the likeness on photographs of Kosygin when he was in his fifties or sixties.) The presence of no longer legible rubber stamp markings on the reverse indicates to us that that this portrait was probably once government or communist party property...

A veteran of the Red Army and the Civil War, Kosygin joined the Communist party in the late 1920s eventually becoming a member of the Central Committee in 1939 and a full member of the Politburo in 1948. After Khrushchev's ouster in 1964, he became Soviet Premier and held the office to within weeks of his death in late 1980. His term of office was during the period that Leonid Brezhnev was General Secretary and one can only guess what life would have been like living in Brezhnev's shadow. His face, however, was as familiar to people living in the West as was Brezhnev's.
